Dr. Hao Ying (Ó¦ºÆ in Chinese) is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wayne State University, Michigan, USA. He published a single-author research monograph/advanced textbook, ¡°Fuzzy Control and Modeling: Analytical Foundations and Applications¡± (IEEE Press, 2000, 342 pages; foreword by Professor Lotfi A. Zadeh), showcasing his extensive original research findings. Additionally, he coauthored the book ¡°Introduction to Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Control: Theory and Applications¡± (IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 2014). Dr. Ying's scholarly output includes over 130 peer-reviewed journal papers and more than 160 peer-reviewed conference papers. He holds a Google Scholar h-index 52, with over 12,000 total citations, positioning him within the top 25% of the 100,000 most-cited authors across all 22 scientific fields (176 subfields)*. He received the 2023 IEEE CIS Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award, the highest honor from the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, with the citation ¡°For fundamental contributions to model-free fuzzy control theory and its biomedical applications.¡±

In addition to fuzzy control, his current research interests include machine learning and fuzzy discrete event systems, which he co-originated in 2001. Click here to see his recent introductory example of a fuzzy discrete event system in the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox of MATLAB.

Dr. Ying is serving as an Associate Editor or a Member of Editorial Boards for 19 international journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems and the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems. His commitment extends to membership in the 2023 Fellows Committee of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, following previous roles in 2021 and 2020. In 2016, 2017, and 2020, he served the same committee for the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. His involvement in professional societies also encompasses his service as a Member of the IEEE Transactions on Fuzzy Systems Outstanding Paper Award Subcommittee in 2023 and 2024. He has contributed his expertise to National Institutes of Health (NIH) review panels, including four panels in 2023 and 2024. Dr. Ying was elected to two terms as a Board Member of the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (2005-2008 and 2008-2011). His leadership roles extend to Program Chair/Co-Chair for four international conferences as well as to such positions as Publication Chair for the 2000 IEEE International Conference on Fuzzy Systems and Competition Chair for its subsequent annual conferences from 2009 to 2011. Additionally, he has been invited to serve as an Organizing/ Program/Technical Committee Member for over 160 international conferences. Dr. Ying is an IEEE Fellow.
